Why This Matters

You just spent a year of your life and a meaningful amount of money building something. Right now, you own it and you cannot prove it, and you could not enforce it if someone took it.

Here is what that actually means.

Your book is protected by copyright the moment you write it. That sounds reassuring, and on its own it is nearly useless. If someone lifts your chapters, republishes your book under another name, or sells your framework as a course, you cannot file suit in a U.S. court until the work is registered with the Copyright Office. No registration, no standing. And if you scramble to register after the theft, you lose access to statutory damages and attorney's fees, which means you are limited to proving what you actually lost. For most authors that number is small enough that no attorney will take the case. The result is a legal right you have no practical way to use.

There is a second gap. Copyright protects the expression, not the idea. Your book text is covered. The framework behind it, the teaching sequence, the assessment, the workshop deck, the certification outline, the material that is often worth more than the book itself, sits in a much grayer area. And most of it never gets registered at all, because it is not a book.

The Details

U.S. Copyright Registration

What it does. Creates the public legal record of your ownership and unlocks the enforcement rights that copyright alone does not give you: the ability to file an infringement suit, and access to statutory damages and attorney's fees when your registration is timely.

How it is filed. Form TX, submitted through eCO, the Copyright Office's electronic filing system. We prepare and submit it.

Government filing fee, billed to you at cost.

● $65 in every other case, including co-authored books and books where an LLC or imprint holds the rights rather than you personally.

Deposit requirement. For a book first published in print in the U.S., the Copyright Office requires two complete copies of the best edition. If your book is available in both hardcover and paperback, hardcover is the best edition. These copies are not returned.

Timing. We file at publication. Registering within three months of publication preserves your access to statutory damages and attorney's fees, which is the difference between a case an attorney will take and one they will not.

Second editions. A revised edition needs its own registration. When you release one, we handle it.

Earlier books. If you have previously published titles that were never registered, they can still be registered at any time. Registering late does not restore the damages window for anything that already happened, but it does give you standing going forward. We offer a batch rate for back catalog registration.

Library of Congress Control Number

What it does. Assigns your title a number in the Library of Congress catalog before publication so libraries and book vendors can catalog and order it. It is printed on your copyright page.

To be clear about what it is not: it carries no legal weight and gives you no protection. It is a credibility and distribution asset, and it is free. Both of those are good reasons to have it.

Program. The Preassigned Control Number program, through the Library of Congress system called PrePub Book Link.

Cost. None.

Requirements.

● It must be applied for before publication. A number cannot be assigned to a book that is already out.

● You need a U.S. address, a U.S. phone number, and a U.S. place of publication listed in the book.

● A 13-digit ISBN is required for each print format.

● A print edition must exist. Ebook-only titles are not eligible.

Your account. The number is issued under your own author account in PrePub Book Link, which means the record belongs to you and stays with you. We set the account up and file the request on your behalf.

On your copyright page. The number appears preceded by the words "Library of Congress Control Number." The first four digits reflect the year we applied. If your book publishes the following year, those digits do not change.

Blockchain Provenance Certificate

What it does. Creates a permanent, independently verifiable record that a specific set of files existed in a specific form on a specific date.

It does not create legal rights. It creates evidence. When the question is who made this first, evidence is what settles it.

Why it sits alongside registration rather than replacing it. Copyright registration covers the registered work, which is your book. The timestamp covers everything else your book produced, including the material with no natural registration path: your named framework, your methodology, your teaching sequence, your assessments, your slide decks, and the draft progression that proves you developed the material independently.

How we do it. One timestamp per book. We assemble a single archive containing every asset, plus a manifest listing each file individually. That archive is timestamped once. Unlimited assets, one certificate.

Copyright Page

Built with your copyright notice and year, you or your entity named as rights holder, the registration reference, the control number in the required format, the ISBN for each format, your imprint and place of publication, and the rights reservation language. This is included rather than left for the interior designer to approximate.

Library of Congress Deposit

Federal law requires two copies of the best edition of any published work to be deposited with the Library of Congress within three months of publication. Most authors have never heard of this. Because we are registering your copyright, the registration deposit satisfies the requirement, and we handle the shipment. Nothing separate is needed from you.

How It Works

Step 1. Intake. You complete a short form covering your legal name, who holds the rights, whether anyone else contributed to the book, your ISBNs, your imprint name, and your planned publication date. Ten minutes.

Step 2. Library of Congress application. We create your PrePub Book Link account, confirm eligibility, and submit the control number request. This happens before your interior is finalized, because the application window closes at publication and does not reopen.

Step 3. Asset collection. We ask you for everything the book produced. Not just the manuscript: the framework document, the course outline, the slide deck, the worksheets, the assessments. Send more rather than less. Anything you leave out is not covered.

Step 4. Archive and timestamp. We assemble your archive, generate the manifest, and execute the blockchain timestamp. You receive the archive and the certificate.

Step 5. Copyright page. We build it with your control number and ISBNs and send it to your designer for placement, then proof it before the interior is locked.

Step 6. Registration filing. On your publication date we file Form TX, pay the fee, and generate the deposit shipping slip. Two copies of your book are ordered, the slip is attached, and the package is mailed to the Copyright Office.

Step 7. Certificate delivery. Copyright Office processing takes time, often several months. We monitor your case and send the certificate the moment it arrives, along with a plain-language summary of what you now hold and what each piece of it does.

Questions You May Have

Is my book not already copyrighted?

Yes. Copyright exists the moment the work is fixed in tangible form. Registration is separate, and it is what gives you the ability to enforce that copyright in court.

Can I do this myself?

Yes. The filing fee is $45 or $65 and the forms are public. What you are buying is that it actually gets done, on time, with the right application type, the right deposit, and the LCCN filed before the window closes. The most common outcome for authors who plan to do it themselves is that they do not.

What if I already published?

We can still register, and we should. You lose the statutory damages window for anything that already happened, and you cannot get an LCCN for a book that is already out. Everything else still applies.

Does the blockchain timestamp replace registration?

No. It proves what existed and when. It does not give you standing to sue or access to statutory damages. Anyone who tells you a timestamp is a substitute for registration is selling you a false sense of security.

Who owns everything at the end?

You do. The registration is in your name or your entity's name, the Library of Congress account is yours, the archive is yours, and the certificates are yours. Nothing is held by Jetlaunch.
